Central Hunter detectives are now hunting the wannabe bandit after his attempt to use the makeshift “weapon’’ in the attempted armed robbery became a miserable failure.
A hollow metal pole, possibly supposed to look like a barrel, had been taped onto a handle of sorts using blue electrical tape.
The robber pulled out the weapon after he entered the Bellbird business about 6.40am on Wednesday and walked to the counter.
But the 27-year-old service station employee took one look at the weapon and refused to hand over anything.
The robber escaped empty-handed and was last seen in a red-coloured vehicle.
He was wearing a navy blue hooded jumper, a dark cap, dark sungalsses and dark pants and was carrying a backpack.
