East Maitland’s Ian Lang and Peter Watson were crowned State President’s Reserve Pairs after a one-shot win against Central Coast father and son combination Josh and Paul McDonnell.
The East Maitland pair were two shots down with two ends to play, but conjured a four-shot win in the penultimate end and held on for victory.
In the state pairs, Kurri Kurri duo Aaron Appleby and Nathan Dawson missed the semi-finals after a cruel last-end loss.
Appleby and Dawson looked set to progress to the semi-finals when they led 23-19 with just one end remaining.
But their opponents Dylan Skinner and Shane Garvey, from Wollongong, manufactured a count of five on the final end to steal the game 24-23.
The Kurri triples team Appleby, Dawson and Corey Parker suffered a loss by the same margin in the round of 16, with Port City winning with a single shot on the last end.
Kurri had raced out to to a 9-1 lead after six ends and led by 13-15 on the 10th. Port City came back and the lead was exchanged until the end.
Maitland City’s fours combination of Daniel Hooker, Darren Kedwell, Rodney Darcey and DJ Dilworth bowed out in the quarter-finals, losing 18-21 to zone four champions Gulgong.
The singles championship continues on Friday with Kurri’s Dawson and Rayond Terrace’s Lennon Scott in action.
