Council received a development application for the $39.9million school on Heritage Drive in July.
The 7.9 hectare site is located in the Thornton North Urban Release Area with plans for the school to occupy the northern portion of the site.
The existing St Aloysius Primary School is on the southern side of the site. Stage one of the primary school is complete with the school operating at a capacity of 383 students.
The primary school has consent for 630 students with 42 full-time staff.
Council has recently approved an application for a 77-place child care centre on the same property.
A report to a council meeting this week said the high school will have a staged enrolment, starting in 2018 with the site targeting to be at full capacity by 2025 with 120 staff.
“The proposed educational establishment is appropriate for the site and will have a positive social and economic impact on the local and regional community,” a planning report said.
Earlier this year the Catholic diocese unveiled the name of the secondary school – St Bede’s Catholic College.
Bishop of Maitland-Newcastle Bill Wright, Director of Catholic Schools Ray Collins, Maitland Mayor Peter Blackmore and freeman of the city Milton Morris unveiled the foundation stone in May.
