The Ellalong trainer-driver was forced to take his seven-year-old entire five wide on the home turn from last at Gloucester Park in heat one (2130 metres), won by champion Lennytheshark.
Ultimate Art was settled back in the field from gate six and a relatively slow first half gave him little chance to challenge the front-runners late. Formosa drew poorly again, in seven, for the second round of three heats, meaning he had no choice but to push forward at Bunbury.
“I didn’t want to give him a gut-buster first night, hoping I could get a better draw the second night,” Formosa said. “But it hasn’t panned out that way, so I’m going to have drive him a bit more aggressive on Tuesday.”
At Menangle on Saturday night, Louth Park trainer Darren Elder’s Shannonsablast produced a mighty run to finish 2.8 metres second to freak mare Arms Of An Angel in the group 3 Kevin Robinson FFA (1609m). The Shane and Lauren Tritton-trained Arms Of An Angel led all the way to clock 1.49.5.
Also at Menangle, Morisset trainer-driver Mark Callaghan won the C1-C2 Country Series final with Culinary Delight and made it a double at the meeting with Rave Moonraker, which dead-heated with Supriya.
At Newcastle on Saturday night, Mitchell Reese drove a winning treble with Tamahay and Guts for Rebecca Brown and Tree Rexx for Barry Fagan.
