Zoo staff prepared fruit blocks for their primates including the marmosets and monkeys while lions were treated to blood-sicles to beat the heat.
Staff member Tanille Brown said the zoo also turned on the industrial sprinklers and limited the amount of shows to keep the animals as cool as possible.
But while the Hunter sweltered through Wednesday’s roasting heat, it was actually hotter exactly four years before.
The hottest January day on record in Maitland was January 18, 2013, when the mercury reached a blistering 44.4 degrees.
