After commanding performances in the qualifying rounds, the Plovers lost the third grade final to Tenambit Morpeth Bulls, fourth grade to Eastern Suburbs and fifth grade to Northern Suburbs.
It was a disappointing end to what could have been one of the crowning moments of club’s 70th anniversary celebrations as all three teams had gone through the preliminary rounds undefeated.
The Bulls batted first at Lorn Park and set a big total of 9-129. Wests lost early wickets and were unable to keep pace with the target to be dismissed for 90.
City United’s Daniel Burford gave his team the edge in the fourth grade final with a rapid-fire 46 including four sixes as City posted 8/142 from their 20 overs.
The game was switched to Thornton after Bill Bobbins Oval was washed out and Robert Wells gave his team a solid start scoring 22 at the top of the order.
Reg Rogers wasted no time in compiling his 17 which included four boundaries. The remainder of the batting order all made contributions.
Wests batted out their 20 overs but fell 14 runs short finishing on 8/128.
Aman Pannu recorded the best figures for City’s bowlers claiming 3-35 from his four overs.
But William Hall’s 1-9 off four was also critical. Steven Atkins was also economical finishing with 1-19 off four.
Northern Suburbs all-rounder Zeke Mathie was man of the match in the fifth grade decider scoring 47 not out and taking 3-15 from his four overs as Norths got home by seven runs.
Norths won the toss and batted first posting 7/100. Opener Luke Farthing was the next contributor scoring 10 before being run-out.
Jackson Spohr (2-13), Isaac Abela (2-16) and Mathie shared the wickers as the Plovers were all out for 93.
