Oscar will travel to Malaysia in November after being named in the Australian team to compete at the Borneo International Futsal Cup to be held in Kuching.
Futsal started as a summer pastime to keep his passion alive in the off-season but his skills transferred from the outdoor game and he successfully trialed for the Northern NSW 11s futsal team to play at the Australian National Futsal titles.
The Northern NSW team were pitted against teams from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane and Oscar’s day Andrew said they had a tremendous result making the quarter-finals for the first time after failing to win a game at last year’s championships.
“Oscar scored 14 goals for the tournament including our team’s only goal in the quarter final,” Stenz said.
“We were very proud of his achievement for Northern NSW and even prouder when we received the email inviting him to play for Australia in Malaysia this November.”
Australia will compete against teams from Sarawak, Saban, Kalimantan, Brunei, Singapore, Kelantan and Selangor.
“It is a fantastic achievement for a boy who only plays for pure enjoyment in the Maitland Futsal tournament every week at Maitland Basketball courts.” Stenz said.
Aside from his futsal commitments, Oscar played for the Hunter Hawks program from 2013-2016 and is now playing for South Wallsend.
He has set his sights on playing for the Newcastle Jets one day.
