After finishing fourth in the NSW Speedway Solo Championship in 2015 and securing a visa to ride in the UK, Poole signed a contract for British League Club, Scunthorpe Scorpions for the 2016 season.
However, plagued by the thoughts of injuries he had suffered in his career and having watched speedway injuries take their toll on his dad, he announced his retirement from competitive racing early in January 2016, withdrawing from his contract with the mutual agreement of the club.
“Tonight’s kind of fun type racing has brought back my passion for speedway,” Poole said at the cup presentation ceremony. “It reminds you that you can still have fun in the sport and Tex Macdonald had that influence on me when I first started racing bikes, so this is a special time for me.”
Poole won the ‘Cup Decider’ from Josh Macdonald with Mason Campton finishing third and Alan Macdonald regaining his saddle after a harmless fall to finish fourth.
The Tex Macdonald Cup team event was won by Reds Raiders, captained by Josh Macdonald. An unbeaten performance by heat leader, Mason Campton with strong point scoring performances by Zaine Kennedy and Kane Lawrence helped secure the 51 – 39 victory.
“That’s been a great way to finish off the Aussie season,” Campton said. “I head back to the UK next week and I didn’t want to miss this special meeting.”
The Junior 125cc teams event was won convincingly by the King Cobras. Jack Miles who captained his team, was unbeaten in all four of his rides, while teammates Aiden Phillips and Tom Drane won three of their four rides.
Drizzly weather throughout the night didn’t dampen the spirit of the hearty fans that turned out for the night which saw the end to the Summer of Speedway season at the venue.
The Kurri Kurri Speedway Club will now take a one month recess from racing action with the 2017 Club Championship Series for all divisions scheduled to get underway on Saturday, April 8.
