The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle has lodged a development application with Maitland City Council for the plan which has been placed on public exhibition.
The site, bounded by Carrington and Hunter streets at Horseshoe Bend, operated as a licensed club and bowling club for many years before it folded in May 2013 after struggling with financial difficulties.
The brick clubhouse on the one hectare site will be retained, cement rendered and fully refurbished internally. The former bowling green will be converted into two segregated outdoor play spaces. If approved, the centre will be known as St Nicholas Day Care Centre and accommodate 70 children and 20 places at the vocational centre.

Maitland-Newcastle Diocese Vice Chancellor Administration Sean Scanlon said the diocese has identified Maitland as a key focus for early education in coming years. “We know parents throughout Maitland value the first class education our Catholic schools offer and we plan to build on this through St Nicholas,” he said.
“The proposed vocational centre is currently under discussion within the diocese, however broadly we envisage this to provide dedicated training facilities for St Nicholas Early Education – for those interested in a career in early education, as well as the potential for use by school students,” Mr Scanlon said.
“As a diocese we’re excited to expand our early education offering to the community through St Nicholas Early Education centres. While the Maitland development is in the initial planning stages before council, we’re also working to finalise build programs for additional sites across Maitland and Lake Macquarie which will be announced shortly,” he said. The diocese has two centres already operating in Singleton and Newcastle West.
