The park has been years in the planning with Maitland councillor Ben Whiting campaigning for the facility in 2013.
Maitland City Council identified six potential sites for an East Maitland skate park but the Lawes Street site, bounded by Lawes, Quarry and Page streets, was the preferred location.
Councillors voted unanimously in favour of constructing the development at a meeting this week.
A concept plan for the park had been placed on public exhibition. The plan was prepared by skate park designers Enlocus following consultation with council and local youth and included an enclosed bowl and street section for skate, scooter and BMX riders.
The plans also included supporting infrastructure like social seating spaces, a large all-weather shelter and an area for events and competitions.
A total of 32 submissions were received as a result of the engagement process. Overall there was support for the design and the idea of having a skate park in East Maitland. A number of respondents said that having a skate park in the area would get people outdoors.
Council’s Recreation Planning Acting Coordinator Amanda McMahon said the final design of the park builds on the suggestions and ideas developed during the consultation period. “Incorporating these suggestions has improved the functionality of the facility,” Ms McMahon said.
