Angry commuters took to Facebook to vent their anger and warn other motorists about the dangerous object on the highway's west bound, outside lane on the approach to the Private Trzecinski Bridge.
Motorists were warned on Facebook to slow down with a number of commuters commenting on how dangerous the object was, many hitting it damaging rims and tyres.
Some were angry there were no signs to warn drivers of the debri, others said they were confused with line markings on the road which made it look as though there were three lanes.
Drivers stopped to take photographs and document damage to their vehicles.
The object was removed overnight according to a motorist who contacted Fairfax Media on Wednesday.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the RMS is carrying out drainage improvements on the New England Highway near Private PZ Trzecinski Bridge.
"Work includes installing additional drainage along the existing median, installing an additional drainage pipe and improving the road surface to provide a stronger, longer lasting and safer road," the spokesperson said.
"Steel plates were recently installed on the New England Highway across a trench where work is being carried out. This part of the work was completed yesterday and the steel plates were removed.
"Resurfacing and line marking work will be completed in the coming weeks, with work expected to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting."
