Twelve members of the Old Boars Motorcycle Club, a family club, rolled out of the George Tavern’s car park on Thursday morning bound for Darwin.
The 8000km-plus round-trip will take them a month to complete. Club president Dale “Woodsy” Woods said the riders would stop in at pubs along the way to rustle-up donations and host raffles for the brain cancer non-profit.
“Within a year [of first supporting the MHF] we had a mate with a melanoma in his lung and his brain,” Woodsy said.
“Thanks to the MHF he received a hugely expensive drug, like worth more than $250,000, and now he’s cancer free.
“It’s funny how things work.”
Foundation president Mark Hughes addressed the crowd as they saddled up.
“You guys have supported us for a few years and we really appreciate it,” he said.
“In a round-about way the people who helped us have had some benefit from what the MHF does.
“It’s tragic to hear about Sharnie Kimmorley… Her funeral is this week.
“More work needs to be done.”
Woodsy and Mr Hughes jointly called on the community to support the Old Boars by donating to the Mark Hughes Foundation at markhughesfoundation.com.au
