A 25-year-old man sustained non-life threatening injuries after he was stabbed in the shoulder at a suburban home last Friday.
Police believe the father also tried to stab his son in the chest and repeatedly yelled that he would kill him.
The incident occurred about 1am after a fight broke out between the pair at a family gathering.
The men were separated by family members.
The father retreated to a bedroom while the son went into the rear courtyard of the home.
The 47-year-old father emerged from the bedroom before he allegedly grabbed a knife from a kitchen drawer.
He then approached his son in the backyard, before another tussle broke out.
The two men fell to the ground before the 25-year-old was stabbed in the right shoulder.
The father allegedly tried to stab his son in the chest, but the 25-year-old managed to defend himself from further wounds, police said.
Family members again intervened and pulled the two men apart.
The father then allegedly chased his son with a screwdriver into a nearby park.
Police said the man again yelled threats to kill his son.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector George Radmore said the 47-year-old stopped chasing his son after he was told the police were on their way.
Paramedics treated the 25-year-old’s stab wound at the scene.
He was taken to Maitland Hospital and has since been released.
Police found and seized the knife and arrested the alleged offender.
The 47-year-old was taken to Maitland Police Station and charged with attempted murder.
He was refused bail at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.
The man will again appear in Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday, June 21.
