The Saints were 14-point losers to last year’s grand final opponent Singleton after jumping to a 20-point quarter-time lead courtesy of a four-goal opening.
Maitland’s lead was cut to 12 by half-time and a third-quarter fade saw them outscored five goals to one and the game was over.
The Saints have played good football in patches but coach David Ross will be looking for consistency if the team is to push for the flag.
