Tinkler, clearly moved by the recognition, has been growing grapes and producing premium wines on his Pokolbin family property for more than 35 years.
Now in its 11th year, the prestigious honour was handed out at a gala event at Cypress Lakes last night.
Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Chairman George Souris said: “Hunter Valley wine country – right on the doorstep of the gateway to Sydney – has gained international recognition as a premier wine and food destination thanks to the hard work, research and caretaking by industry stalwarts like Ian and we thank him for that.”
Previous recipients of the award include Bruce Tyrrell, Brian McGuigan, Jay Tulloch and Ian Scarborough. There were several other significant annual awards on the night too. They include:
- Rising Star – Rauri Donkin, Bimbadgen Estate;

- Cellar Door – Thomas Wines;
