But once they started to get to know each other they soon realised they had met their mate for life.
The Campbell’s are now reflecting on their life together after celebrating 60 years of marriage earlier this month.
“She was dancing with a friend of mine and he introduced her to me,” Mr Campbell said.
“It was gradual, it wasn’t like a bolt of lightning struck and we knew, it was gradual and eventually we decided to get engaged and get married.
“We fell in love and that was it.”
The couple married on May 11 at St Peter’s Anglican Church in East Maitland and had three children – Rick (deceased), Brett and Lisa.
Now they have 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs Campbell said she soon favoured Mr Campbell once she got to know him.
“I liked his easy going lifestyle, he was fairly easy going and he was different,” she said.
“He was an English man and he had came out here in 1952 with his parents and his sister.
“I liked the lifestyle of England, he brought that here.”
Mr Campbell said the key to a long marriage was being tolerant and making sure they had their own interests.
