This week's cold snap has come as a shock to local residents who last week were basking in mild sunny days and temperatures in the low 20s.
Winter has hit with a vengeance two days early leaving the region shivering through the coldest night this year on Monday.
Cessnock was the region's coldest location recording an overnight low of -2.2 degrees.
It was followed closely by Scone which recorded a fresh -1.8 degrees.
Forecaster for the Bureau of Meteorology Rebecca Kamitakahara said the conditions are set to continue throughout the week.
A cold front over the far south west of the state is crossing NSW with a high pressure system south of the bight extending a ridge behind it. The high will move over south eastern Australia on Thursday and it is expected to become slow moving, the Bureau has posted on its website.
"We will see cooler temperatures persisting and in some places, particularly the Upper Hunter, most over night temperatures will hover around zero degrees," Ms Kamitakahara said.
She said the Hunter's coast and possibly parts of the Lower Hunter will experience some windy conditions and rain.
"There will be an increase in shower activity closer to the coast over the next couple of days but no really significant rainfall is expected and the mornings will be cool," Ms Kamitakahara said.
"We have recently had a lot of above average minimum temperatures along the coast, so the drop to these cooler temperatures has been extremely noticable."
She said Tuesday will be the sunniest day this week with Wendesday through to the end of the week set to experience showers and cloud cover.
"We will see maximum temperatures of 15 through to 18 degrees for the remainder of the week across most Hunter locations. Winter is certainly here."
