On Monday night Maitland District Coin Club will auction the 1967 Australian Pattern Goose Dollar following its monthly meeting at Tarro Baptist Church Hall.
Coin club sales secretary Steve Schumacher said the coin is not an official issue but it does play an important part in Australian coin history. Nicknamed the Goose Dollar the coin became popular and is fetching good money at auctions with only 1500 minted.
In 1965 the coin, designed through a competition, was rejected but competition organisers decided to have it minted privately.
The coin has a $1200 reserve but is valued at $2500. It is part of an array of coins, bank notes and other items available at the auction.
