Lee Smith, 30, of Gillieston Heights is co-founder of the HGL and is one of two captain/coaches of the Hunter Valley Miners, one of the four teams in The HGL.
Lee has played rugby league from a young age, but got into gridiron six years ago after seeing the sport on television and video games.
“Gridiron had an appeal to me from a young age,” Smith said.
He said with limited opportunities to play the sport around the Hunter was motivation to found the league.

The Hunter Gridiron League consists of four teams, with about 55 players in total.
The Lake Macquarie Marauders, Port Stephens Bombers, Hunter Valley Miners and Newcastle City Cannons have just completed the second year of the HGL after six rounds and a “Hunter Bowl”.
HGL games are played on Sunday and training is on a Wednesday at Speers Point, where the league is based.
Lee said there were eventual plans to move into state league, as well as expanding the Hunter league with other regional teams from the area.
