Emergency services received a call out to the Churchill Crescent property at 10.29pm on Tuesday. They immediately evacuated three adjoining units as the fire was a risk of spreading.
Rutherford Fire and Rescue were first on the scene, followed shortly by East Maitland and Maitland crews.
“It was believed there may have been someone in the house, so Rutherford Fire and Rescue conducted a search of the property immediately on arrival,” East Maitland station officer Condy Kwan said.
“The unit was found to be empty at the time of the fire and police were able to contact the occupant.”
It took crews 30 minutes to douse the flames and almost two hours to ensure the area was safe. It is believed the fire started in the bedroom of the unit. The cause is still under investigation.
