Police were patrolling Cessnock Road when they spotted the man “acting suspiciously” near a vehicle about 2.30am Wednesday.
The 27-year-old man allegedly ran off when he noticed police, who pursued him on foot and by vehicle.
Police said the man ignored requests to stop running before the police car caught up with him in Second Street.
When police questioned the man he allegedly admitted to stealing the tyres.
Officers returned to the business where they found a tyre and mag wheel displaced from storage.
The man was charged with larceny and breaching bail conditions from a prior incident.
