The speed restrictions came into place on Wednesday.
Council’s Acting Manager Infrastructure Design Jayanta Saha said as part of the implementation process some signs were temporarily covered to ensure there was no conflicting speed restrictions in place.
The 40 kilometre per hour speed restriction was enforceable from Wednesday and covers the area bordered by High Street in the North, Bulwer Street in the east, Railway Street in the south and St Andrew’s Street in the west.
The Levee shared zone will remain a 10 kilometre per hour zone.
Parts of Central Maitland which already have a 40 kilometre per hour speed restrictions in place will remain the same.
Council has advertised the change in local media and further information will be sent out via its social media channels this week.
