At approximately 5.30pm Port Stephens SES was called out to the incident at Woodberry.
The highly trained animal rescue crew and a local vet managed to sedate the horse. A crane was used to lift the animal out of the hole and back to safety.
The horse was in good condition and is expected to make a full recovery.
“I work at the Riding for Disabled in Raymond Terrace and look after 19 horses, so it is very rewarding to be able help one of our furry little friends, despite the smell,” Phil Hudson, local controller of the Port Stephens SES.
