The five-and-a-half-hour trek to Maitland last Thursday paid dividends for Irwin when litter mates Northern Nangar and Golden Nangar won the two heats and early favouritism for the final this Thursday.
Irwin, who won the May final with Winksey Valley, also scored an impressive treble on Thursday afternoon when Winksey Valley won the Commercial Painting Group Stakes over 400 metres.
Northern Nangar was the most impressive, winning the first heat from box six in a slick 25.28 seconds.
The son of Barcia Bale and All Too Fancy beat the Wendy Ison-trained Limeburner Dave by five lengths. Also making it through to the final were Who Ha for Raymond Lee and Speciality for Sam Sultana.
In the second heat Golden Nangar had to work hard from box eight and held off the Allan Hicks-trained Fab In Black to win in 25.41s.
Blazin’ Carter for Carole Eaton and Zipping Potter for Jason Mackay also made the final, which carries a $2800 jackpot from Ladbrokes that takes first prize to $4300.
Early Christmas
Greta GBOTA branch members had their Christmas in July celebrations at the Maitland track last Thursday.
The branch members also sponsored the Winter Sprint Final over 450 metres and were trackside to present a trophy to Park Ridge trainer Glenn Smith after Spendiferous made good use of box one to win in 25.14s.
