Twelve Maitland schools will be among those joining in celebrations across the two days, with Schools Tree Day to take place on Friday before National Tree Day on Sunday.
The huge community contribution has been aided by Maitland City Council, who provided 1000 native seedlings to residents on Wednesday ahead of a planting day to be held at Walka Water Works on Sunday from 9.30am.
National Tree Day manager Debbie Agnew said the involvement of schools was an “opportunity to help our children develop a lifelong connection to nature, so that they may become the caretakers of the future”, with a theme for students this year of ‘Be Inspired: It’s in Our Nature’.
Last year more than 124,000 NSW volunteers helped to plant 160,000 native trees and plants at over 1,330 sites across the state.
