The Maitland Mercury is a fantastic place to do work experience if you’re looking for options or if you believe you want a career in journalism.
This week has been a really interesting and exciting week for me.
I now have quite a passion for journalism and I believe that I would like to pursue a career in this field.
The work I have completed is just a stepping stone of want I want to accomplish in the future.
Last week I interviewed people and wrote my own articles which have been published in the paper.
The first interview I sat in on was a very different experience but it was one I enjoyed thoroughly. It was a very emotional interview. It was about a woman with a brain injury who suffers pain 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Doing my own interview was very nerve racking at first but it was still a great experience and one I will take away with me.
To see the Earth Market launch in person was a very interesting experience, the support it has in the Maitland area is really quite astonishing and an experience I will never forget.
A very nerve racking experience was calling someone on the phone for the first time, well what do I say?
But by the end of the week it became quite natural and the people I spoke to were very lovely which helped a lot.
There weren’t many boring moments, and I have learnt about the effort journalists put in on a daily basis and I admire them.
The work they do for the community to inform everyone of what is going on is astonishing.
I recommend anyone with an interest in journalism or anyone sitting on the edge to think about going into a career in journalism.
I have learnt a lot this week about what journalists do and how they work, it takes a very organised and flexible person for the job.
Overall this experience is one I will cherish and hope to make a career out of it because I have discovered that journalism is something that I would like to pursue.
