The Saints have won their two previous encounters this season against the Magpies and, despite a loss in their last game of the regular season to bogey side Singleton, should be confident.
Maitland’s miserly and creative defence led by Dean Notman and Andrew Thompson should be able to hold the Magpies to a beatable score.
However, the Saints will need to improve on their delivery up forward after being guilty of bombing the ball forward in blustery conditions in their recent 27-point loss to Singleton.
Maitland has built a fast-paced attacking game to benefit from their midfield leaders Dustin Spriggs and young vice-captain Riley Newstead’ clearance dominance.
They have plenty of pace on the outside, but need to create space and quick ball movement to give their key forwards Pat McMahon, Wade Beard and Ben Crowley one-on-one contests.
The Saints have plenty of small crumbing forwards led by Chris Pedler and Josh Button. The Damico brothers Aiden and Luke can also provide another avenue to goal.
The other key will be centre clearances and Maitland will be looking for big games from ruck duo Mick Norton and Hayden Taylor to give the advantage to midfielders.
Blues’ big test
The Maitland Saints women’s team face the toughest test in BDAFL Women’s football when they meet the all-conquering Newcastle City in Saturday’s preliminary final.
The final, one of two to decided the grand final combatants, is at Dick Burton Oval in Nelson Bay and shapes as a David and Goliath contest with the Blues unbeaten this season and the Saints in their first finals campaign.
The other preliminary final is between Nelson Bay and Gosford.
