To the laymen, the event is known as the RSPCA’s August Cupcake Month.
To the active participant, however, it is an opportunity of a lifetime, a whole month filled with good excuses just to have one more bite of a sweet treat.
Although Cupcake Day is officially held on Monday August 21, participants are encouraged to hold an event any day throughout the month, promising that the animals will not hold a grudge for lack of punctuality.
Still need more incentive to get involved?
Absolutely 100% of the proceeds will help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the 135,000 animals that come through RSPCA’s shelters each year.
For those who may not be so good with numbers, but have always been able to rely on food, here are those statistics transferred into cupcakes: 12 cupcakes can provide an orphaned kitten with a bed, litter tray, meals and a toy, 50 cupcakes can pay to desex a cat or dog, 120 cupcakes can subsidise emergency surgery for an animal and 175 cupcakes can subsidise the cost of prosecuting a cruelty offender in court.
“All money raised through the Hunter shelter for this event helps animals in our care,” Hunter RSPCA senior manager Debbie Jaggers said.
“It allows us to prepare them for their forever homes, providing shelter, nourishment, veterinary treatment and rehabilitation.”
Last year, Hunter RSPCA, which is based at Rutherford, raised more than $4000 from the August event and this year they are hoping to beat this figure.
So far, more than $200,000 has been raised towards this year’s cause. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
“At the Hunter Shelter we will have cupcakes for humans and pupcakes for animals, available from Saturday 19 August to Monday 21 August,” Dr Jaggers said.
“The event has a fun element, the kids can get involved and who doesn’t love cake?”
