In a major boost, Hamilton captain Steve Lamont and inspirational forwards Joe Akkersdyk and Pete Maxwell are set to return in the major semi-final.
Lamont suffered a broken arm in July and along with Akkersdyk (neck) and Maxwell (bicep) wasn’t expected to play again. “They must be good healers,” coach Scott Coleman said.
The Hawks are throwing a 50th anniversary party for the final home game against Merewether on Saturday. They will wear retro jerseys and have a series of events culminating with a DJ set at the ground until 9.30pm.
* Former Hamilton hooker Chris Pusi has missed out on a bench spot for Warringah in the Shute Shield grand final against Northern Suburbs at Norths Sydney Oval on Saturday. Pusi, fellow Hawk Tiueti Asi and Wanderers No.8 Daniel Martine all featured in the Rats’ top grade during the season.
Another former Hawk, Nick Palmer, would have been lining up for Norths. Instead he moved to New Zealand mid-season and made his debut off the bench for Hawks Bay in the Mitre 10 cup against Southland last Saturday.
* Lake Macquarie coach Tim Chidgey has his fingers crossed that bruising breakaway Ken Villiamu doesn’t have to work overtime on Saturday. The prison warden was held up at work last Saturday and only made it to Maitland for the final moments of the loss.
* Uni’s Fausto Delli Carpini could be the first player to finish in the top four point-scorers in the competition to do a nudie run. The Argentine has scored 127 points but is yet to cross the tryline.
