Former Maitland Greyhound Club sponsorship and promotions manager Fred Robertson thought Red Ones was a “good thing” to win his heat and anyone who listened to his advice at the track on Thursday afternoon would have been well rewarded with $2.70 on the tote.
Red Ones led from start to finish in a best-of-day 22.40 seconds in the last of four 400 metre heats - about four lengths faster than the other heat winners.
The magnificent 33-kilogram fawn dog by El Grand Senor out of Mad Manalishi has now won five of his 10 starts at Maitland and his early speed has served him well when drawn inside or out wide.
The Charlie Lamb-trained Two Blues (22.98s) finished eight and a quarter lengths behind Red Ones to also secure a spot in the final.
Dual Keroma (22.75s) was the first runner into the Easts Les Darcy Cup final when he came from well back early to run down the Terry Callen-trained Replacing Diana (22.90s).
Rich Tom (22.88s) won the second heat for Karen Sanderson, beating the Louise Mcgee-trained Revlon Babe (22.91s) by half a length.
Firestorm (22.76s) won the third heat for Betty Keene, beating the Peter Tobin-trained Black Shark (22.90s) by two lengths.
Good luck to all the runners in the final.
Inaugural Les Darcy Cup
East Maitland Bowling Club and East’s Leisure and Golf Club are the major sponsors of the inaugural Les Darcy Cup, established to honour one of our city’s favourite sporting sons.
As a thank you to the two clubs for their support of the event any member of the bowling or golf clubs who show their membership cards at the Evans Street gate at Maitland Showground on Thursday afternoon will receive free entry.
Bell’s charges impressive
Another highlight of this Thursday’s race meeting will be the running of the East’s Leisure and Golf Club Final over 565m.
Blacksmiths trainer Ron Bell appears to have a strong hand with his charges Umatilla and Becks winning the two heats in impressive style.
Umatilla won the first heat in 32.31s from Astella, Bula Supaguse and Flash Flock, which also go into the final.
Becks won the second heat in 32.68s from Canny Drive, Fab In Black and Sheba’s Doll.
Thomas enjoys consecutive wins
Sawyers Gully trainer Darryl Thomas enjoyed a double in consecutive races at Maitland on Thursday with Team Jarvis winning the East Maitland Bowling Club Maiden over 400m and Silver Gambler winning the J&H Air Conditioning Maiden.
Red Ones led from start to finish in a best-of-day 22.40 seconds.
