The Aberglasslyn Ants have gone undefeated throughout 2017 to claim the inaugural Newcastle Hunter Rugby League Ladies League premiership.
The Ants defeated Newcastle University 18-0 after a nervous start kicking against the wind.
“The girls were actually a bit nervous going into the game. There’s the unknown about your first grand final, but there was a bit of pressure on them to win after not dropping a game all year.”
Kicking against the wind, Aberglasslyn led 12-0 at half-time with the gusty conditions playing havoc with goal kicking.
“We scored three tries, but none of our conversion attempts were successful,” coach Mick Akers said.
“We were able to control the game with out kicking game with the wind in the second half. We kept them pretty much down their end.
“We sealed the match with a converted try, but once we had a lead we weren’t going to let it go.”
Full report to come.
