Organiser Warrick Penfold said it was shaping up to be the biggest Maitland postie bike meet-up yet, with bikes coming from as far as South Australia and far north Queensland.
Mr Penfold said there was a simple reason behind the widespread appeal of the postie bike.
“Everyone knows what a postie bike is,” he said.
“Everyone has seen one out the front of their house, dropping off mail, everyone recognises them.”
He’s confident that, between the Maitland nationals and Cessnock’s postie bike grand pix, the Lower Hunter has a firm stake in being the “capital of postie bikes in Australia”.
“It’s getting bigger every year,” he said.
A huge array of bikes is expected to be on show, ranging from those that are barely roadworthy to others worth thousands.
Enthusiasts visiting town will have a packed schedule to enjoy.
This will include a show and shine alongside the classic letterbox races and the wheelie and tyre changing competitions.
Postie bike soccer, which involves riders kicking a giant ball while on their bikes, will also make a return, while riders will have an opportunity to partake in three cruises out through the Hunter’s vineyards.
The public will be welcome to visit and cast their eye over the array of bikes on show from 3pm Saturday at the Maitland Rally Ground, near Maitland Railway Station, for a $5 entry fee. Funds raised will go towards Hunter Valley Men’s Crisis Support.
