On Saturday morning council will give away 1000 native plants at Maitland Regional Art Gallery – it will start at 9am and remain open until the last plant is gone.
Each household in the Maitland local government area can take away up to four native shrubs or seedlings for planting in their backyards.
The giveaway is to help celebrate September as Biodiversity Month, which aims to promote the importance of protecting and improving biodiversity both within Australia and across the world.
“Biodiversity is vital in supporting human life,” Council’s Executive Manager Planning, Environment and Lifestyle Bernie Mortomore said. “There are a number of ways individuals and communities can help protect biodiversity in their local area. Perhaps the easiest way is to create a natural habitat in your own garden. This looks good and helps to provide sanctuary for local birds and wildlife.”
Proof of residence is required for the giveaway.
