It’s exactly the present Calvary Mt Carmel Retirement Community resident and former Weston woman Doreen Richardson received ahead of her century celebration on Wednesday.
Mrs Richardson certainly has not lost her wit, joking that she’d use the cream at night and wake up 21.
Her last four birthdays have been celebrated in the McDonalds party room with her great-grandson who shares the same birthday. Mrs Richardson would treat herself to a Mac Jr and ice cream cake, before shouting the family a soft serve.
It hasn’t always been good times throughout Mrs Richardson’s life. The former dressmaker has battled cancer and other illnesses to make it to triple figures, but she tries not to dwell on the negative.
“I’ve been very fortunate,” she said.
“My two daughters, I don’t know what I’d do without them.”
And her family certainly love her back. About 30 immediate relatives will visit on Wednesday for the birthday celebration and her granddaughter Bernadette Flannery has even created a ‘100 years of Nanna’ blog.
Ms Flannery posted an entry on Facebook every day for 100 days, each detailing the life and times of her grandmother.
The blog has attracted a fair share of admirers. Mrs Richardson has received birthday cards from people she doesn’t even know.
Mrs Richardson has asked her friends and family not to give her presents for her birthday, but rather to donate a gold coin to give to a South African children’s charity.
