Maitland City Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the 40-child day care centre, which will replace the existing early learning centre at Hunter Valley Grammar School on Norfolk St.
Crs Nicole and Philip Penfold didn’t participate in the debate or discussion due to their own home being in close proximity to the proposed development.
Councillors heard a presentation from one public speaker who voiced his concerns about traffic congestion, parking issues and the road condition. While multiple councillors agreed they were valid issues, it was decided the development’s benefits outweighed these concerns.
The boarding house application at 46 Devonshire St was lodged under a State policy that aims to promote the development of new affordable rental housing.
Cr Peter Garnham and Cr Robert Aitchison both said during discussion that “we do need this type of housing” in Maitland.
