Neil won for a portfolio of work judged in the Nikon-Walkley community/regional prize category. She was recognised for her work with the Herald and other Fairfax publications, including The Maitland Mercury and Port Stephens Examiner.
It is the second Walkley win for the Herald this year after reporters Carrie Fellner and Michael McGowan collected the Young Walkley Award for community/regional journalism in July.
Herald editor Heath Harrison said Neil’s triumph was a “great reward for a brilliant photographer”.
“Marina is a star and such a deserving winner of this award,” he said. “The Herald is blessed to have a team of incredibly talented, creative and hard-working photographers. Their work amazes us every day.”
Last month, the Herald was named the PANPA Newspaper of the Year and Website of the Year in the regional category, both for the fifth year in a row.
