On Saturday and Sunday, October 7 and 8, the group met for their 50th school reunion.
“This class was the first year of the Wyndham scheme, whereby the school secondary term was increased from five years to six years,” former classmate Graham Banister said, adding it was the year the Higher School Certificate was born.
“It was also the first year of selective co-ed classes between the Marist Brothers and the Dominican girls high school – somehow, we all survived.”
Most of the class of 26 attended a guided tour of their Marist Brothers campus, now known as St Peter’s.
“A big thank you to Raylene for her time – some of the stories sure surprised her,” Mr Banister said.
The group enjoyed dinner at East Maitland Bowling Club, followed by breakfast the next morning, with 25 “old boys” in attendance.
Some even travelled from as far as Perth and Brisbane.
“The friendship born during those six years of secondary education was well and truly to the fore last weekend,” Mr Banister said.
“The only things to change over 50 years was the colour of our hair and the size of our waistline.”
