The Arts About Town grant program invites artists to create temporary and semi-permanent works for public spaces, streets and laneways across Maitland that were identified as in need of transformation and revitalisation.
One of this year’s successful grant recipients, performance group Curious Legends Theatre Company will put on a Halloween themed puppet, lantern and light show in Coffin Lane this Saturday from 7pm.
Ghosts, lanterns, shadows and puppets combine with food trucks and spooky sounds in a family friendly event for all ages. Curious Legends has worked with kids from Metford and Maitland Primary Schools to create the display.
“This is the first time council has run a program like this and we really want to encourage locals and visitors to Maitland to get out and take a look,” Council’s place activation officer Amber Herrmann said.
Following the Coffin Lane exhibition, Kieran Glasgow will install his ‘Flying Fox Colony’ sculpture at Rutherford Shopping Precinct, Denise Duffy will hang her recycled plastic inspired ‘Chandeliers’ along the Hunter Riverwalk and Gretchen McNeill will paint her ‘Shadow Trees’ in East Maitland.
The Arts About Town grant program is part of Council’s Creative Streets initiative, which aims to fund creative projects that bring vibrancy to the city and activate Maitland’s streetscape.

In the event of rain, the event will run on November 11. See Curious Legends website for details.
