Elegant Kiora Villa is nestled among rambling old gardens on the fringe of the historic river port.
Built in 1878, Kiora’s owners will throw its doors open to the public this weekend to help raise funds for Friends of Grossmann House.
Painted in dove grey, the old house has welcoming verandahs on three sides, fringed with white iron lace and columns. It is framed by huge old trees, many as old as the house.
The house is believed to have been built by the White family of JG White Joinery, a business which operated in Morpeth between 1838 and 1968.
As beautiful as Kiora now appears, it has not always been kept in such fine condition and went through a period of decline until it became completely derelict. In the mid 1980’s, it was overgrown, the verandahs had rotted and collapsed and the roof had given way.
Its inherent qualities were recognised by historian Chris Richards who undertook an extensive restoration.
Mr Richards took about 12 months to restore and uncover Kiora’s fine details, then sold it to the Green family. Now almost 30 years on , Kiora Villa is again a fine home, treasured by its proud owners, Chris and Kerrie Purcell.
