“It was a fluke that mum was diagnosed,” she said. “The lump was right against her breast bone. It wouldn’t have been found by touch.”
That was nine years, two surgeries, rounds of radiation and a flight from New Zealand to Australia ago, but since then Ms Anderson has had her own breast cancer scare.
The disease has understandably become quite close to her heart, so Ms Anderson has organised a fundraiser breakfast to support Pink Ribbon this Sunday.
Ms Anderson has always donated to the cause behind the scenes, but this year is ramping up her support.
She has partnered her business Mortgage Choice Maitland with Hunters Quarter restaurant and Cockfighters Ghost wines for the event.
Ms Anderson said she wanted to do something upbeat for the cause.
“We’re trying to celebrate the good side of breast cancer, because it’s not a death sentence,” she said.
The event, which is called Bubbles and Boobs, is a high tea style breakfast at Hunters Quarter. Tickets are $90 and are available through Sticky Tickets.
