“I was sitting on the ground holding my girlfriend’s hand watching the live feed on TV,” Kayla said of the announcement on Wednesday which revealed 61.6 per cent of Australias voted in favour of same sex marriage.
“I was very anxious (ahead of the result), it made me very emotional but after hearing ‘yes’ I’m overwhelmed by the love and support the community has given the LGBTQ family and celebratory drinks are definitely in need.”

Kayla, who came out six years ago while in high school, said the campaigning in the months leading up to the plebiscite impacted her daily.
“To be completely honest it affects my day to day life, as it does for every other LGBTQ person especially in the last few months,” she said.
“Regardless of the yes or no outcome I was worried about mine and the safety of my LGBTQ brothers and sisters, it’s a scary world.”
She hopes the result will finally bring an end to the debate.
“I just hope people realise that we are human too, we deserve to love and be loved by whomever we want, we should have just as much right to marry the person we love as anyone else,” she said.
“Who I kiss goodnight shouldn’t bother you.”
