Staff at the local business donned heeled sandals to take a stance against domestic violence ahead of White Ribbon Day on November 25.
The Wear A Pair campaign is a light-hearted way to support what is a serious issue in the community – in the 12 months to June 2017, police recorded 435 domestic assault offences in the Maitland area and on average at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia.
“Statistics from White Ribbon indicate that domestic violence is very wide spread nationally and far reaching. Every community including Maitland is touched in some way,” Radio Rentals Maitland store manager Dean Houlahan said. “So many people within the local community, including our customers, are touched by domestic violence.”
Maitland mayor Loretta Baker said domestic violence was a whole community issue, and urged people to call it out when they see it.
