Two men, aged 36 and 37, attended a Mitchell Close home about 2pm.
An altercation broke out before the 36-year-old was stabbed four times in the back and once in the thigh. The two men then fled the scene.
The injured man was driven to Cessnock Hospital where he was treated and conveyed to John Hunter Hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. He was released from hospital on Tuesday.
Police were notified and attended Cessnock Hospital, but the other male drove away from the scene when officers arrived.
Police followed him and stopped the car in Boomerang Street before the man ran from the vehicle.
Officers commenced a search and allegedly found the man inside a bathroom at a residence on Hunter Avenue.
Police claim the man forced entry to the home and menaced a 46-year-old woman before he hid in the bathroom.
He was arrested and taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with concealing a serious offence, trespassing and two outstanding offences relating to break and enter incidents in Newcastle.
Police commenced investigations into the stabbing which led them to the Mitchell Close home later that day.
Central Hunter crime manager Detective Inspector George Radmore said when police arrived it appeared that someone had tried to clean the scene.
A woman, 55, and two males, 15 and 24, were then arrested and taken to Cessnock Police Station where their clothing was seized for forensic examination.
All three were then released pending further inquiries. No charges have been laid yet over the stabbing.
Police are still investigating the matter and are appealing for information, which can be reported to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
