The incident on Monday was captured on dashcam footage by Maitland resident Fred Goode, who described the action as “idiotic”.
The footage shows a silver SUV driving around the boomgates as a train approached at the Paterson level crossing.
About 10 seconds later the north coast XPT service sped through the intersection.
Mr Goode said the incident was “terrible” to watch and the driver “diced with death”.
“It’s quite evident that they haven’t seen the level crossing warning adds on TV,” he said.
Mr Goode said he intended on taking the footage to Maitland Police to be viewed.
Drivers who ignore stop signs, flashing lights and boomgates at level crossings can be slugged with a $415 fine and three demerit points.
