Juicy and mouth-watering fruits to quench the thirst on a hot day, and there has never been a better time to enjoy them. 

Two hundred kilograms of peaches from Medowie will land in The Levee on Thursday as yet another food rescue operation unfolds at the Slow Food Earth Market.

Shoppers can buy eight peaches for $4 or 10 for $5.

“The peaches are ripe and need to be eaten, or poached and frozen very soon,” Slow Food Hunter Valley leader Amorelle Dempster said.

“They have ripened on the tree, which is the best way for them to grow, but they are imperfect so they cannot be sold through The Tin Shed in Medowie.

“We need anyone who loves peaches to come to the market and help rescue this food.

“It might have been deemed imperfect, but there is nothing wrong with the taste.”

A few kilograms of nectarines are also expected to make an appearance alongside the usual stallholders.

“It’s not often here in Maitland that we can enjoy local fruit, so this is a treat we will all enjoy,” she said.

The market starts at 2pm and runs until 7pm.
