Roger Lewis, the CEO of Hunter Resource Recovery, which manages recycling for the Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton and Lake Macquarie council areas, was invited by NSW environment minister Gabrielle Upton to join in on an independent analysis of glass waste, commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency.
The development comes after Maitland Council voted in August to lobby the state and federal governments for solutions to the glass waste crisis.
Ms Upton replied earlier this month, with councillors noting the return correspondence at Tuesday’s council meeting. Ms Upton’s reply included the invite to Mr Lewis and an update on what action has been taken so far to address glass waste.
Fairfax Media revealed in August that more than 50 tonnes of glass waste were being transported to Victoria and stored in sheds every day, as the lack of demand for the product resulted in the collapse of the recycling market.
