Staff were able to return to the building on Monday afternoon after a walk through by management, police and firefighters deemed the building safe.
Police don’t know yet who made the call, but are still investigating the situation.
EARLIER
A police operation was underway after Maitland’s Community Corrections Offices across from Maitland Police Station were evacuated on Monday morning.
Staff inside the building on Caroline Place self-evacuated over what The Mercury understands was a bomb scare about 11.30am.
Police blocked off Caroline Place at both ends while those evacuated retreated to Turner Rest Park, next to Maitland Police Station.
A police spokesperson said police and Fire and Rescue became involved due to the nature of the incident and their proximity to the building.
The spokesperson could not provide further information about the incident until further inquiries were conducted, but pointed out that there was no imminent threat.
The police spokesperson anticipated that staff would be able to return to the building soon.
Corrective Services NSW declined to comment due to the ongoing police operation.
More to come.
