Newcastle Rugby League chief executive officer Matt Harris said a stronger alignment with the Knights and better support networks were the main reasons to affiliate with NSW Rugby League next season rather than any possible financial benefit.

Harris was on Friday afternoon given official notification of The Wests Group’s support regarding Newcastle RL’s potential shift to the metropolitan-based group away from traditional governing body Country Rugby League.
But the deal’s not yet complete, with the matter on the NSWRL board’s agenda in January before the outcome gets communicated to CRL.
“I’ve had a short message from Wests saying they support the decision of the [Newcastle RL] district clubs to determine affiliation,” Harris said.
“It’s still pending approval from NSWRL, but we feel it’s the right move for us.
“There’s a couple of aspects to it, but the stronger alignment with the Knights and better resources significantly help to improve the level of our game.
“There may be some support in administration and opportunities to reduce costs, but straight out funding didn’t influence the decision at all.”
Harris said links to the Knights include a more direct pathway for players from local first grade to NSW Cup and under-20s, with all competitions set to be run under the same roof.
Harris also pointed to match-day services like a doctor, ground manager and concussion officials as well as a centralised judiciary and referee exchange.
Meanwhile, the $2million sale of Newcastle Leagues Club by Newcastle Rugby League was settled earlier this week.
