Maitland starts New Year's celebrations with spectacular fireworks

Thousands of people gathered beside the Hunter River to enjoy a spectacular 10-minute fireworks display to kick off New Year's celebrations in Maitland.

The focus was on family fun and the tradition of setting off the fireworks at the kid-friendly time of 9pm was a hit again with families travelling from Newcastle and Cessnock to enjoy the festivities.

Children played volleyball and other ball games in the relaxed atmosphere on the Lorn side of the river, where a giant slide was hugely popular with the kids as well.

The biggest crowd gathered on The Levee where food and carnival stalls did a roaring trade.

Scott and Cassie Styles and their sons Clayton and Xavier travelled from Newcastle for the Maitland fireworks.

“We had heard great things about the night in Maitland. We had heard the fireworks were great and that it was a really friendly and relaxed night,” Scott said.

“It’s lived up to everything we heard. We’ll certainly be back we had a great time.”
