The choir formed in 1987 when the choir at Maitland Grossmann High and Maitland Boys High schools were amalgamated and membership was opened to the public to mark the city’s bicentennial.
Founding member Heather Russell-McLaren said she approached the mayor of Maitland, Cr Peter Blackmore in the lead-up to the event and asked if the choir could be named Maitland City Choir.
Cr Blackmore agreed and Mrs Russell-McLaren took her inquiries a step further and wrote to the Earl of Lauderdale in Scotland to ask permission for the choir to wear the tartan they still use today.
Mrs Russell-McLaren said the choir remained an important part of the community. She praised Hope Langman for her devotion to the choir.
“She has held this choir together and worked tremendously hard,” Mrs Russell-McLaren said.
“Hope has gone from being a student in the choir when it formed to being the director of the choir.”
Mrs Russell-McLaren encouraged the community to attend the celebrations on Sunday at 2pm at St Peter’s Anglican Church in East Maitland.
“If anyone has been a part of the choir or has enjoyed their singing we encourage them to come along to our concert,” she said.
Tickets are $15.
